Playground Fun Demonstrates Rotational Mechanics Concepts
Thompson, Michael; Barron, Philip; Chandler, Charles; Shaw, Katie; Hannafin, Kieran
Physics Education, v45 n5 p459-461 Sep 2010
It might be said that physicists experience life somewhat differently from other people. Whether turning a corner in a car or observing a sunset there is an inherent need to understand, as well as to appreciate, the beauty of everyday life. There is no better an example of this than the rides in a children's playground. The playground holds a whole host of physics demonstrations: circular motion, angular momentum, energy transformations and simple harmonic motion to name a few. Playgrounds can be used across the whole range of abilities and from the lower years up to, as demonstrated in this article, providing enrichment to an upper-sixth class at the tail end of their A-level course.
