Helmdon's First Rainforest
Blackburn, Sue
Primary Science Review, n77 p8-11 Mar-Apr 2003
This article describes how Helmdon Primary School is transformed in a memorable learning experience. It started out as a simple idea, a whole-school art exhibition centred on the theme of a tropical rainforest. The focal point was to be a life-sized rainforest created using a variety of media in the school hall. The school wanted the children to gain an understanding of the vital role that the rainforests play in the delicate balance of the world ecosystem. Through direct experience and extended research children began to grasp these complex ideas. Through this six-week whole-school project the school's aim was for children to appreciate the need to protect the rainforests of the world and to give them the opportunity to contribute directly to saving an area of forest through interest and enthusiasm and relaying that message to parents and the wider community.
