Minority Recruitment, Retention and Academic Achievement the NCSSSMST--Sloan Foundation Project
Stapp, Betty
NCSSSMST Journal, v16 n1 p24-26 Fall 2010
The National Consortium for Specialized Secondary Schools of Mathematics, Science, and Technology (NCSSSMST) has long been concerned with assisting member schools in meeting the needs of the under-represented populations in their communities. This article presents a condensed report that summarizes a major project that has continued relevance today. Under a grant from the Sloan Foundation grant, NCSSSMST held two Summer Institutes in 2001 that focused on three issues: (1) recruiting of underrepresented students; (2) retention of those populations; and (3) enhancing their academic achievement. Participants in the institutes identified valid strategies that worked for participating schools and created a compilation of programs and staff that member schools can contact for further information or assistance.
