Pattern Problems in Middle Grade Mathematics Curricula

In this paper we consider important factors influencing different curricular approaches to the study of numerically and geometrically defined pattern-type problems in the middle school curriculum. Our analysis involves the consideration of recommendations from national standards documents and their influences on state framework documents (Kindergarten through Grade 8) and highlights the interplay between such documents and published curriculum materials. We present sample problems appearing in middle grades mathematics curricula and suggest the importance of pattern-type problems is illustrated by their inclusion in mathematics curricula throughout the 20th century. This paper is the introduction manuscript to, Analyzing Numerical and Geometric Pattern Problems in Middle Grades Mathematics Curricula, where we critically analyze the mathematical treatment of numerical and geometrically defined patterns in the middle grade curriculum in regards to the teaching and learning of beginning algebraic concepts and procedures.
