This study investigated the mental health (MH) needs of mothers in the criminal justice system using qualitative methods. Identified needs included counseling to help mothers recover from trauma, to define sense of self, and to link them with external support systems. This study confirms and extends the knowledge base regarding the MH status and counseling needs of incarcerated mothers. A section of this article, discusses the findings, integrates these findings with the literature, and provides practical application suggestions for clinical MH counselors and future researchers.
