Profiles in Research: An Interview with Karl Gustav Joreskog

This article presents an interview with Karl Gustav Joreskog. Karl Gustav Joreskog was born in Amal, Sweden, on April 25, 1935. He did his undergraduate studies at Uppsala University from 1955 to 1957, with a major in mathematics and physics. He received a PhD in statistics at Uppsala University in 1963, and he was a research statistician at Educational Testing Service and a visiting professor at Princeton University from 1965 to 1971. In 1971, Joreskog returned to Sweden to become professor of statistics at Uppsala University. In 1984, he was appointed a research professor of Multivariate Statistical Analysis, a position he held until his retirement in 2000. Joreskog has authored several books and numerous journal articles on factor analysis and its extensions and on structural equation modeling. Together with Dag Sorbom he developed the LISREL computer program. Joreskog is currently Professor Emeritus at Uppsala University and Professor in the Department of Economics at the Norwegian School of Management, Oslo, Norway. In the interview, Joreskog shares the reasons he became interested in statistics, why he specializes in factor analysis, and his role in developing the LISREL computer program.
