Cryptology
Tech Directions, v70 n9 p25-27, 29-30 Apr 2011
Cryptology, or cryptography, is the study of writing and deciphering hidden messages in codes, ciphers, and writings. It is almost as old as writing itself. Ciphers are messages in which letters are rearranged or substituted for other letters or numbers. Codes are messages in which letters are replaced by letter groups, syllables, or sentences. There are many ways to encrypt a message. This article describes a few examples and includes an activity on how to build and use an encryption wheel. (Contains 3 figures.)
