Managing Plagiarism: A Preventative Approach
Insley, Robert
Business Communication Quarterly, v74 n2 p183-187 Jun 2011
Plagiarism is a reality in most college classes where some students plagiarize unknowingly and others do so knowingly. This situation requires instructors to decide how to manage the situation. Some may take the easy way out by ignoring the problem, simply pretending that none of their students plagiarize. In contrast, other instructors embrace the problem by putting forth the effort, the time, and the creativity to devise practical solutions. Embracing the problem, in turn, gives way to two major challenges. The first involves a willingness to move past the disappointment and frustration associated with accepting that some plagiarism is very likely occurring in classes. The second challenge involves devising practical approaches to manage the problem by reflecting on teachers' past experiences, applying creativity, and considering methods suggested by others. In this article, the author focuses on approaches designed to embrace the problem. The author first describes the difference between punitive and preventative approach to manage plagiarism. Next, he explains the main reasons students plagiarize. Then, he presents several approaches that are relatively effective in managing plagiarism in an extensive team project in his business communication classes; all link directly to specific reasons for plagiarism. Last, the article presents some additional possibilities for managing plagiarism.
