The Conduct of Socially Valid Investigation by Culturally Diverse Researchers: A Delphi Study
Dutta, Alo; Kundu, Madan; Chan, Fong
Rehabilitation Education, v24 n3-4 p113-122 2010
Minority researchers have traditionally exhibited a need for and interest in investigating non-mainstream issues involving diverse communities. Since faculty at colleges and universities within the United States are largely Caucasian, research on issues relevant to marginalized groups is lacking. This three-stage Delphi study was designed to identify variables that can affect involvement of rehabilitation faculty from underrepresented groups in scholarly pursuits. Participants were educators and researchers in rehabilitation and allied health disciplines. Findings indicated significant need for mentoring junior minority faculty, using retention and promotion policies designed to address cultural differences, promoting cross disciplinary scholarly efforts, and including mixed methods research as an approved mode of scholarly investigation.
