Why Join an Autism Research Study?
Schoenfeld, Jane
Exceptional Parent, v41 n4 p22 Apr 2011
The author's daughter has an autism spectrum disorder, as well as numerous other medical conditions. Like all parents of kids with special needs, she has spent enormous amounts of time and energy on hospital stays, therapies, and advocacy. She has also taken some time to participate in research. First and foremost, she wants to be aware of the most current therapies so that she can take advantage of them for her child. Secondly, she wants to help scientists find out the causes, the most effective therapies, and, if possible, a cure so that other children will be spared something of what they have gone through. Third, research is fascinating. In this article, the author describes what one can get out of joining an autism research study and urges parents to consider joining a study.
