Mathematics for Life: Sustainable Mathematics Education

Ecological sustainability has not been a major focus of mathematics education research, even though it has attracted considerable attention in other areas of educational research in the past decade. The connections between mathematics education and ecological sustainability are not readily apparent. This paper explores how mathematics educators might reorient their current practices in order to act for a sustainable future. Following an examination of possible responses to sustainability in mathematics education, two extended examples are offered: large numbers and chaos. The paper concludes by outlining some possible features of sustainable mathematics education.
