Latinos and School Choice
Gastic, Billie; Coronado, Diana Salas
Journal of School Choice, v5 n1 p139-142 2011
The authors describe how Latino students are underrepresented in public schools of choice. They provide evidence to refute the claim that Latino students who choose to leave assigned public schools enroll in religious schools instead. Charter schools stand out as the type of public schools of choice where Latino students are well represented. However, because charter schools enroll only 2% of public school students in Grades 1-12, they do not currently represent a broad avenue of opportunity for Latino students. The authors conclude by making recommendations regarding how public school choice can be increased for Latino students. (Contains 1 note.)
