Opportunities for and Barriers to Powerful and Transformative Learning Experiences in Online Learning Environments

Powerful and transformative learning experiences display characteristics in common with each other. Emerging communication technologies may increase opportunities for powerful and transformative learning experiences. To explore this question, there are four sections to this article. First, it is observed that there are many interesting synergies between physical and virtual experiences that have provided people with new kinds of learning environments. Second, the interconnectedness between powerful and transformative learning experiences is noted. Third, associations between powerful learning experiences and complexity and complex adaptive systems are considered. Lastly, the authors speculate on directions for technology development and communication applications that could foster opportunities for powerful and transformative learning.
