Why Is It Important to Analyze and Use Business and Human Resources Data?

The flattening world, growing expectations of accountability, and retiring baby boomers are just a few of the issues in the rapidly changing work environment that make it essential for colleges and universities to understand a wider variety of business affairs data in order to be competitive and effective. To meet these challenges, institutional research professionals must continually expand their responsibilities and revisit the types of data used and the way that data are managed and applied. The ability to process data more rapidly and decision makers' thirst for data are driving this expansion. It makes sense that simpler routine tasks should be automated to leave more time and resources to add value by transforming data into useful information. In order to inform decision makers of institutional effectiveness, institutional researchers are looking closer at the types of data that have been largely ignored in the past. An example is the analysis of facilities data. Watt (2007) explains how institutions can benefit from better understanding facilities data on classroom management, personnel management, research activity, and return on investment analyses. Another area of study into which institutional researchers' roles are expanding is the analysis of human resource and finance data. This chapter provides a framework of how and why human resource data are used, as well as the different analyses that college and universities are currently using, to determine institutional operational needs and effectiveness.
