Predilection or Preconception? A Reply to Treccani and Umilta
Fischer, Martin H.; Shaki, Samuel
Brain and Cognition, v75 n3 p316-318 Apr 2011
The commentary by Treccani and Umilta (2011) on our recent paper in this journal (Fischer et al., 2010) usefully broadens the perspective on numerical cognition for a general readership and clarifies (or raises) some fundamental issues of cognitive representation. Our response to this commentary is organized into three main sections that focus around the interpretation of the different performance signatures mentioned. This will hopefully capture the thrust of the authors' arguments and further contextualize this field of work. Following the same objective, we also provide an outlook onto a broader theoretical framework for the role of space in numerical cognition.
