Otrebski, Wojciech; Rutkowska, Katarzyna
Physical Education and Sport, v52 p11-15 2008
Study aim: To determine the need of female junior volleyball players to collaborate with a psychologist, considering previous sport career of those players. Material and methods: A group of 78 female volleyball players aged 14-17 years from 7 top Polish junior teams participated in the study. They were requested to fill questionnaires on their sport careers and collaboration with sport psychologists. Results: The majority (82%) of young, elite female volleyball players declared no previous experience of psychological support but 86% wanted to collaborate with sport psychologists. Over 50% of respondents preferred such collaboration to be initiated by the coach, to be conducted teamwise and to take about 2.5 h a week. Significantly (p less than 0.05) more respondents who considered engagement in professional sport wanted to collaborate with sport psychologists and to spend more time on it compared with those who would not undertake sport professionally. Moreover, those who were ready to collaborate, declared significantly (p less than 0.05) higher satisfaction from playing volleyball than those who were not. Conclusion: The attitudes and opinions of athletes ought to be considered when planning and designing training objectives, schedules and mode of management. (Contains 3 tables and 2 figures.)
