The Power of One, Revisited: Inspiring Examples Remind Us We Can All Find Ways to Make a Difference
Hirsh, Stephanie
Journal of Staff Development, v31 n6 p40-42, 44-45 Dec 2010
More than 10 years ago, the author wrote her first version of "The Power of One" for the "Journal of Staff Development." She described her personal journey of discovering how one person could make a huge difference in the face of what appeared as insurmountable challenges. She described ways in which she had made such a difference and told, through the lens of a school board member, the ways she saw community and education leaders make differences as well. People told her that the article inspired them to take actions they had never before considered. Many shared their personal success stories. Yet she is concerned that there are still too many people offering excuses rather than solutions for transforming professional learning to improve student success. Perhaps one has heard these problems before: (1) The legislature will not fund it; (2) The state board will not consider it; (3) The school board does not care about it; (4) The superintendent does not believe it; (5) Central office wants to control it; (6) Principals do not have time for it; and (7) Parents fight it. Fortunately, the author continues to find compelling examples to contradict these beliefs. As with her examples years ago, in each case, the author traces the outcomes back to one person or a small group of people. Having served as a policy maker and learned from those who take action that leads to change, she offers suggestions for anyone interested and committed enough to become that voice of one.
