Short-Term Effects of Midseason Coach Turnover on Team Performance in Soccer
Balduck, Anne-Line; Buelens, Marc; Philippaerts, Renaat
Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, v81 n3 p379-383 Sep 2010
The present study addressed the issue of short-term performance effects of midseason coach turnover in soccer. The goal of this study was to examine this effect on subsequent short-term team performance. The purposes of this study were to (a) examine whether midseason coach turnover improved results in the short term, and (b) examine how team performance compared with teams that did not have a coach turnover. The results showed that changing the coach to improve short-term performance in soccer is not the most appropriate way to deal with a performance dip. Teams with the same performance pattern as the turnover group significantly improved after a performance dip without changing coaches. Future research using qualitative and quantitative approaches is needed to fully understand the effect of coach turnover on team performance. (Contains 2 tables and 1 figure.)
