Motivating Mathematics Learning through an Integrated Technology Enhanced Learning Environment
Samuels, Peter
International Journal for Technology in Mathematics Education, v17 n4 p197-203 2010
Many developed nations have a serious problem with a shortage in the supply of numerate graduates, fuelled by their school students' negative attitudes towards their future study of mathematics. At the same time, the smart phone and other personal sensing technological devices are becoming commonplace amongst students in schools and universities. The web 2.0 paradigm shift in internet usage is also starting to have a profound effect on social practices of students in secondary and higher education. This article proposes an innovate pedagogy for both motivating mathematics learning and encouraging the acquisition of specific mathematical cognitive skills based on collaborative problem-solving, animation and the realisation of mathematical concepts through robots. At its centre is the student's personal mobile device. The research evidence behind each element of the design of the proposed pedagogy is discussed, along with current and future plans for its implementation. (Contains 4 figures.)
