Back to the Basics of Classroom Management
Del Guercio, Ryan
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v76 n5 p39-43 Jan 2011
The author was a rookie with no student teaching experience who started working at a high school two months into the year. Because his classes had been taught by numerous substitute teachers, the students didn't believe that he was their "real" teacher. Adding to his challenge, the students were almost entirely male in a technology education course where dangerous tools were being used. He was determined not to be one of the many teachers who leave the profession after just a few years. Instead, he developed many useful strategies and through the years, he has never stopped experimenting with new discipline methods. And no matter how long he teaches, he always goes back to the basics when it comes to how to handle his classroom. In this article, the author discusses the basics of classroom management: (1) Establish control; (2) Create effective discipline policies; (3) Build rapport; and (4) Determine the needs of problem students. He also provides several effective management strategies.
