Leading Democratically

Democracy is the most venerated of American ideas, the one for which wars are fought and people die. So most people would probably agree that leaders should be able to lead well in a democratic society. Yet, genuinely democratic leadership is a relative rarity. Leading democratically means viewing leadership as a function or process, rather than as an individual, or group of individuals', exercise of certain behaviors. The process of democratic leadership includes two specific, indispensable, and inseparable notions. First, everyone potentially has a responsibility to lead, to put their energies and talents at the service of the group, and to be held accountable for their actions to the group. Second, everyone has a right to lead--to participate fully and have an equal opportunity to influence the outcome of deliberations regarding how people are to share resources and ensure all have equal life chances. Despite all the potential problems associated with learning and leading democracy, the author argues that it provides the best setting for people to talk, think, and act together. Leading democratically involves trusting the extraordinary knowledge of ordinary people and working to ensure that those affected by decisions have the most powerful voices in those decisions and have access to all relevant knowledge.
