Some teachers seem to have got into a mindset of "if it's not in the specification, it doesn't get taught". In this article, the author argues that this way of thinking is a restrictive view of science teaching. Such an approach indicates an abdication of responsibility on the part of the teacher. The author contends that teachers should have more freedom to teach "off specification". This could be achieved by providing specifications that cover broader scientific concepts rather than just specific factual statements. He stresses that science educators should not abdicate their responsibility. They should fight for a science education that delivers a scientifically literate population, and which also encourages more young people to pursue careers in the sciences.
