Virtually Endless Possibilities for Business Communication
Jennings, Susan Evans
Business Communication Quarterly, v73 n4 p456-459 Dec 2010
Business communication educators need to realize that as technology changes and evolves, they must also change and evolve their teaching methods and content. Cell phones, email, blogs, wikis, and text messaging are just a few examples of business communication technologies that not so long ago were viewed as entertainment for teens or techies, but scoffed at as true business communication technologies. Now these are mainstream business tools. Another relatively new communication tool used in business is the virtual world such as Second Life (SL). A virtual world allows participants, both instructors and students, to create a representation of themselves in the form of an animated character called an avatar. This avatar allows the user, in virtual form, to travel throughout the virtual world and do almost anything the person can do in real life, as well as many things he or she could not or would not do. In this article, the author describes how she infused SL activities in a sophomore online business communication course. She points out that determining the goal of instruction is the first step toward a virtual classroom experience. Once that goal has been established, it is then possible to examine whether SL can be an appropriate tool for achieving the learning. (Contains 2 figures.)
