Extension Disaster Education Network (EDEN): Preparing Families for Disaster
Washburn, Carolyn; Saunders, Kristine
Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, v102 n2 p61-63 2010
According to the American Red Cross (n.d.), less than half of Americans have an emergency preparedness plan in place. Therefore, it is critical that the Cooperative Extension System takes a role in encouraging the development of family preparedness plans. The Extension Disaster Education Network (EDEN) has developed a family and consumer sciences (FCS) educational program to help families prepare for emergency and disaster situations. The Family Preparedness Education program was a collaborative effort between EDEN and Extension preparedness specialists from across the nation. EDEN is a collaborative multi-state effort of land grant universities designed to improve the delivery of information and services to citizens affected by disasters. Free online educational courses are available including programs on food safety, pandemic preparedness for business and faith based organizations, animal agrosecurity, and other courses designed to educate Extension personnel, first-responders, farmers, and community members. It may be impossible to prepare for all unexpected events, but FCS educators can play an important role by preparing families and providing important EDEN resources to communities.
