Gifted Learners in an Urban Setting: Challenges and Opportunities
Grubb, Robert
Gifted Child Today, v34 n1 p60-62 Win 2011
Gifted learners face many challenges in urban settings. Limited access to enriching life experiences, the challenges of coming from a second language background, lack of exposure to classical ideas, and financial constraints can each individually impose barriers to academic success. On the other hand, the urban setting can offer advantages to gifted students that are not available to students in nonurban settings. This article describes the challenges facing gifted students in urban settings as exemplified by Juan, Jackie, and Melvin.
