The Backpack Design Challenge
Roman, Harry T.
Technology and Engineering Teacher, v70 n3 p12-14 Nov 2010
Something as simple as carrying books to school can be an interesting design challenge for students. It's an old problem that gets reinvented from time to time. In this article, the author discusses a backpack design challenge in which teachers work with students to design another way to carry books to school. The challenge started by trying to come up with a new way to carry books. It ends with a radical departure by thinking about eliminating books from school. This is an example of how inventors and engineers often progress through their work. Sometimes, redefining the problem leads to an entirely different course of action and new possible opportunities.
