Jelly Making: Children's Science Discourse and Thinking

By the age of seven, many children would have eaten jelly and many would have experienced its preparation by watching adults. This small scale study explores the use of different levels of thinking skills and language in discussing the process of jelly making among Grade 2 students. Semi-structured, one-to-one interviews with fifteen students were used to elicit their existing conceptions about jelly making and to gather information about their ability to conceptualise further when the conditions of jelly making are changed. The results show that the students have a solid grasp of the procedural process of jelly making and could describe the phenomena at the macroscopic level, but there were variations in their cognitive abilities to grasp the abstract at the microscopic level and to translate their prior knowledge to new situations. The study provides insights into children's view of the world and their ability to apply different levels of thinking. (Contains 1 table.)
