2010 CCCC Chair's Address: Rethinking the Fourth "C"--Call to Action

This article presents the address given by Valenino at the sixty-first convention of the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) held in Louisville on March 18, 2010. In her address, the author discusses the fourth "C" and how the last part of the title was inherited. As a teacher of composition and oral communication, the author believes the fourth "C" is quite appropriate. And she urges teachers to attend sessions describing how best to integrate communication theory and practice into their courses. The purpose of her address, however, is to rethink that fourth "C," to look at "Communication" more comprehensively, to describe the whole of what teachers do when they engage students in the interactive, interpersonal processes of composing--because no matter the decade or methodology for learning, the need for human communication, exploring and sharing meaning, remains the crucial part of the discipline.
