Pre-Service and In-Service Science Teachers' Conceptions of the Nature of Science

The author explores the history of nature of science beliefs among pre-service and in-service teachers primarily in the United States and Thailand and compares this history to findings in a current study being conducted in Thailand. Two research questions were used to guide this current study: What are pre-service and in-service science teachers' conceptions of the NOS, particularly with regard to scientific knowledge, the scientific method, scientists' work, and scientific enterprise? What are similarities and differences between pre-service and in-service science teachers' conceptions of the NOS. The findings of this study may inform stakeholders about the current state of pre-service and in-service science teachers' understanding of the NOS and, subsequently, inform the design and implementation of programmes and curricula that promote understanding of the NOS at both the pre-service and in-service levels.
