When Students Make Threats
Kanan, Linda M.
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v76 n3 p24-29 Nov 2010
Much has been written about the use of threat assessment. Schools are encouraged to have threat assessment teams and a threat assessment process as part of a comprehensive safe schools effort. Encouraging and enabling members of the school community to report possible threats in a timely manner is an essential component of an effective threat assessment process. Equally important is having procedures in place for evaluating the information and acting on it in way that protects the well-being of all students and staff members, including the student who has displayed the threatening behavior. In this article, the author discusses how schools can lay the groundwork for dealing with threats and provides key findings regarding threat situations.
