Nonprofit Sector: Workforce Education Needs and Opportunities
Garvey, David
Continuing Higher Education Review, v73 p114-124 Fall 2009
When some people think of nonprofit organizations, they think of small charities that are short-staffed, often struggle financially, and provide basic human needs to the most vulnerable in the society. Others think of organizations that support the civic and social infrastructure of communities, states, and nation, and serve as a vital component of the nation's economic engine. Both perceptions are accurate. In this article, the author offers a close look at nonprofit organizations and their sense of scale in America's economy as well as their employment opportunities resulting from an aging workforce and a shortage of managers in the field. He demonstrates how Nonprofit Leadership Program (NLP) was created to meet these training and employment needs in the nonprofit workplace.
