Presidential Satisfaction with Development Programs in Research and Doctoral Universities: A Comparison of Results from Surveys in 1990 and 2000

International Journal of Educational Advancement, v6 n3 p182-199 May 2006
The increasing costs of higher education and the decreasing willingness of taxpayers to support it have amplified the importance of fund-raising in the modern university. The (dis)satisfaction of the university president with his/her development program can have profound ramifications for the success of the program and the careers of the development professionals. This paper addresses a gaping hole in the academic and practitioner knowledge base by investigating what makes presidents satisfied and/or dissatisfied with their institution's development efforts. A president's perceived expertise of the fund-raising staff and his/her satisfaction with the funds raised in the past year are significant predictors of the president's overall satisfaction with fund-raising at the university. This paper also explores changes in satisfaction with fund-raising from 1990 to 2000 and finds in general that university presidents were more satisfied with most aspects of fund-raising in 2000 than they were in 1990.
