Achieving Your Vision: How to Make Sustainable Living a Reality on Campus
Orr, Andrea
Community College Journal, v81 n2 p20-24 Oct-Nov 2010
Located on a wildlife reserve in northern California, Butte College is an environmentally conscious community, complete with an extensive solar-power program and a transportation network built to keep cars off its roads. The college generates more solar power than any other community college in the country and is a nationally recognized leader in sustainability. Close to half the energy Butte uses is derived from solar power produced on campus, and it aims to become grid-positive--that is, to generate more clean energy than it consumes--by 2011. Good intentions and environmental activism abound on college campuses, but Butte has proved adept at channeling goodwill into tangible results. A growing number of community colleges are taking steps to formalize their commitment to green living and sustainability. Last year, the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) formed a Sustainability Task Force to help colleges reduce waste, preserve resources, and prepare students for jobs in the green economy. The author asks green pioneers at community colleges around the nation to share best practices for sustainability.
