Bringing Sally Smith's Vision to Manayunk

In this article, the author narrates her application of what she learned from her internship at Sally Smith's Lab School of Washington to her new school and shares the favorable impact it had brought on her teaching career. The author shares her first exposure to the powerful effects of Smith's "Live It, Learn It" methodology as she encountered a child who knows so much about archaeology and who was influenced by the archaeological dig that The Lab School has hosted. This approach, one that inspired wonder in those that participate, is one that truly and maximally embodies both spirit and theory. Determined that her new students could experience the same fascinated wonder she often saw on the faces of her students at The Lab, she decided to implement Smith's "Live It, Learn It" methodology in her social studies class. Quickly, she began to find the success that Smith had found. Her students were begging to have more time to learn about the topic. When "Live It, Learn It" was working at its best, she never had to fight for attention and rarely encountered behavioral problems. When Smith contacted her about an opening in Philadelphia, she immediately jumped at the opportunity to be a part of building a new outpost of Smith's extraordinary model.
