Sally Smith's contribution to the world of children with learning disabilities is well documented, particularly by the other contributors to this journal. An area deserving attention, but one usually overlooked, is Smith's understanding of the parent's perspective--the challenges of parenting a child with learning disabilities. It was a priceless gift of understanding. In this article, the author shares her story of how Sally Smith helped her understand the rough road being traveled by parents having children with learning disabilities. The author shares that her son still attends The Lab School of Washington, where he thrives. His extreme anxiety is a thing of the past. He feels safe, secure, and valued. While only eleven, he understands he needs to learn differently than many other children his age. He uses the term "learning disabilities" in referring to himself easily and without embarrassment. The author and her husband watch with immense love and pride as he grows. They know this isn't the end of the story, but they feel better equipped to deal with what lies ahead. The school created by Sally Smith not only has taught their son to take on new challenges, but they have learned to let go--because Smith understood.
