Rethinking Aristotle's "Poetics": The Pragmatic Aspect of Art and Knowledge
Gupta, Anoop
Journal of Aesthetic Education, v44 n4 p60-80 Win 2010
I attempted to argue that, for Aristotle, art can be understood to have instrumental consequences directed toward external ends affecting ethical praxis. First, I considered the philosophical case that art, for Aristotle, affects ethical practice. Second, the non-philosophical literature related to some of the possible usages of art is sampled. Finally, I argued that knowledge must be understood in terms of a social practice. The noteworthy implication of this paper is that both knowledge and art, for Aristotle, have potential ethical consequences. (Contains 83 notes.)
