Beauty in the Context of Particular Lives
Rautio, Pauliina
Journal of Aesthetic Education, v44 n4 p38-59 Win 2010
This paper is based on empirical research by the author into the everyday lives of people living in a small village. Everyday life is approached as a subjective process in time and space, experienced by particular people in a particular environmental and social context. The data of this research has been collected through correspondence in which participants reflected their experiences of everyday beauty. This paper focuses on the found challenges of researching everyday beauty empirically and discusses selected findings. Beauty brings about reflections having to do with one's place in the flow of time and is used for evaluating and directing one's life. The seemingly passive taking of time when observing beauty, sometimes even labelled escapism, can instead be seen as educationally relevant: as active managing of one's life at the constitutive and perpetual level of growing as a human being. In research and in the media, life in rural northern villages is often approached as laden with negative aspects one needs to survive and cope with. Reconsidered in the context of particular lives, it seems to be just these challenges that make everyday life feel as one's own making: a construct with beauty. (Contains 48 notes.)
