Lessons Learned in "The Faculty Room"

A collaboration of postsecondary institutions nationwide undertook a project to apply research in developing methods and materials to help instructors more fully include students with disabilities in their courses. These institutions conducted a needs assessment; developed content and delivery modes; undertook a rigorous formative evaluation; delivered professional development presentations to faculty, administrators, and teaching assistants; and evaluated results. Participants reported that, as a result of the presentations, they were better able to find resources on their campuses to accommodate students with disabilities, they gained knowledge about legal obligations, and they learned specific teaching strategies and accommodations that benefit students with different types of disabilities. The author shares lessons learned from this project that can be applied on any postsecondary campus to improve teaching and assessment. (Contains 2 figures.)
