On the face of it, the restoration of a classic car is an unlikely catalyst for community cohesion, but Nottingham City Council's Brough Superior project is a terrific demonstration of the difference learning can make not only to the lives of learners but also in breaking down barriers between individuals and giving them a sense of shared identity and purpose. More than 100 adults from across Nottingham dedicated well in excess of 2,500 hours to the restoration of the 1930s classic car, working with professionals to get a piece of Nottingham history out of storage and back on the road, while documenting its history and the history of the city in the Thirties. The project, which was funded with a 97,500 British Pounds grant from the government "Learning Revolution" Transformation Fund, shows just how far limited resources can be stretched by creative project leaders with freedom to innovate and a committed team of volunteers willing to go the extra mile to get the work finished. This article explores why the project has been a success.
