The Petri Project Pipeline for Education, Training Resources, and Innovation
Adams, Cindy; Bortz, Carolyn
Community College Journal of Research and Practice, v34 n11 p954-956 2010
Northampton Community College (NCC) responded to an industry identified need within the regional biotechnology community for entry-level production workers in biomanufacturing. In an effort to meet this need and create a transitional program of study for dislocated and incumbent workers, NCC partnered with the local Workforce Investment Boards, school districts, and representatives from a dozen biotech companies to devise the PETRI (Pipeline for Education, Training, Resources and Innovation) project in the summer of 2006. Two specialized diplomas were developed, one in aseptic processing and one in automation control in biomanufacturing. These credit-bearing, career-latticed specialized diploma programs provide for quick entree into the high growth biomanufacturing industry. NCC's innovative approach to addressing this workforce need has yielded positive outcomes for students, the community, and industry partners.
