The Mathematics Outreach Center--Saving Dreams
Carter, Edythe; Wetzel, Kathryn
Community College Journal of Research and Practice, v34 n11 p901-903 2010
Today's colleges are faced with accommodating students that are increasingly underprepared. While Amarillo College has provided coursework for underprepared math students since 1980, in the fall of 2005 a significant change was implemented that positively impacted the student outcomes. This change was the creation of the Mathematics Outreach Center (ORC). This center meets the diverse needs of its students, increases their opportunities for success, and assists them in meeting their educational goals. The ORC uses innovative funding and cross-discipline cooperation to make a cost-effective difference in the lives of thousands of students. Using limited resources, tutoring sessions have increased in four years and students' test grades have been proven to increase up to two letter grades. In Spring 2009, the ORC was awarded the national John Champaign Memorial Award which is given to the one nominated program that best exemplifies innovative and economical use of resources to effectively reach students.
