A Practical Approach to the Individualized Education Program
Sandt, Dawn D.; Karriker, Yvette
Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v23 n4 p11-16 Mar-Apr 2010
Physical educators of students with disabilities are frequently expected to participate in the development of individualized education programs (IEP), but sometimes this responsibility can be time-consuming. It is unrealistic to attend every meeting for every student with a disability and those receiving special education services. Physical education teachers and coaches need a tool that communicates their ideas regarding the student's physical education program in their stead while they fulfill their other responsibilities (i.e., teaching a class or coaching). The "Physical Education-Individualized Education Program" (PE-IEP) worksheet is such a tool. The primary purpose of the PE-IEP worksheet is to guarantee that any goals and objectives included in the IEP are written by a professional physical educator who is familiar with the capabilities and needs of the student. The PE-IEP allows for individualization as most sections encourage the physical educator to provide information that is unique to the student. This document supports the physical educator as he or she attends to classroom or coaching responsibilities while guaranteeing their participation in the development of quality physical education goals and objectives that meet the needs of students with disabilities.
