Social Basis of Learning: From Small-Group Learning to Learning Communities
Smith, Karl A.
New Directions for Teaching and Learning, n123 p11-22 Fall 2010
The social basis of learning is a concept that has been embraced by the higher educating community. Since the 1980s, there has been exciting growth and the development of specific practices that better engage students in academic content. The purpose of this review of the social basis of learning is to summarize contributions on this topic to the "New Directions for Teaching and Learning" ("NDTL") series and connect them to events occurring more broadly. The author hopes "NDTL" will continue to focus on the nexus between theory and practice and that more faculty will turn to "NDTL" for guidance in identifying and embracing evidence-based promising practices.
