All children have their own unique ways of interacting with their environments, connecting with people around them, and learning about their world. Babies take in information from their senses and use this information to respond to people and events. Children's daily experiences facilitate integration of their senses. These early sensory experiences are associated with the child's overall development. Dunn (1997) emphasizes that in order to promote sensory functioning, caregivers must recognize its components and understand that sensory integration is crucial to the development of infants and toddlers. Through the organizing and processing of sensory information, young infants form long-lasting mental representations of events, which then guide their future movements, problem solving behaviors, and early attachment relationships. Acknowledgement of the roles the senses play in learning is certainly not new to the early childhood community, yet few appreciate the full constellation of ways children take in information differently from each other. Also, many very young children have difficulties in managing the information they take in through their senses. This article offers guidance on how early care providers can use this information to support young children's sensory integration and functioning. (Contains 2 tables.)
