"Inclusion of Repatriated Greek and Foreign Immigrant Students in School Education": A Possible Good Practice for Intercultural Inclusion
Parthenis, Christos
Intercultural Education, v21 n4 p395-403 Aug 2010
The development and implementation of the program "Inclusion of Repatriated Greek and Foreign Immigrant Students in School Education" (referred to as the "Program") by the University of Athens, in collaboration with the National Ministry of Education, initially formed an innovative, external support initiative to schools in the field of intercultural education. The "Program" forms part of the Government's commitment to implement national intercultural education strategies, but at the same time extends these strategies by providing and ensuring education programs and processes that accurately and positively reflect cultural pluralism, as well as promotes cultural and learning inclusiveness. The main focus of the "Program" has been the support of multicultural schools by providing models of effective and diverse teaching and learning practices, by using specialized teaching media, by offering training and professional development opportunities, and by creating new teaching and learning material. The "Program's" successful implementation became a source of information and educational practice for enhancing intercultural goals for other countries facing similar challenges in their school education due to migrant influx. The "Program" also contributed to the development of permanent intercultural support structures in the Greek education system. (Contains 2 notes.)
