The Crisis in Higher Education: The Views of Academic Professionals on Policy, Leadership Values and Operational Practices

There is a perception of crisis in UK higher education, particularly in England. This article identifies elements of the perceived crisis, quantifies the depth of the crisis from the perceptions of a sample of nearly 300 academic staff, and exemplifies the gap between stated policy and the realities of delivery. Comparisons are made between subgroups based on sex and length of experience. There is consistently strong agreement across all groups about policy initiatives (which are seen as failing); on institutional leadership and management (experienced as damaging); professional values (being eroded) and academic standards (failing).
