How can teachers make learning exciting for students who are immersed in the digital age of television, interactive computers, video games, and Internet entertainment? To meet this challenge, teachers continually look for ways to motivate and involve their students. One option for bridging the gap between traditional learning environments and the digital world of today's students is high-quality digitally delivered learning. To build that bridge, teachers can involve their students in online collaborative learning communities. Before diving in--or surfing out--educators should get familiar with online collaborative learning communities by exploring various samples, knowing the reasons for participating, locating Internet clearinghouses, and examining characteristics of effective projects.
