Integrating Literature: A Novel Idea!

Content area literacy is a growing trend across the entire secondary school curriculum. Science, history, physical education, and mathematics teachers are being required to teach reading comprehension in their classrooms. Many resources are available to aid students' prereading, reading, and postreading skills. Typical activities include KWL charts, anticipation guides, think-alouds, and graphic organizers--all powerful strategies to help students understand the texts they are reading. To get into the habit of reading regularly, students need to read content that captures their imagination and piques their curiosity. Encouraging students to read in mathematics classrooms, the authors believe, increases their comprehension of word problems, their mathematical vocabulary, and their critical thinking skills. In this article, the authors present ideas which they generated to help mathematics teachers begin to incorporate literature into the mathematics classroom. These ideas are not meant to be used all in one academic year or to force reading into the mathematics curriculum. The authors' intent is to adapt a trend--reading across the curriculum--and offer suggestions to ambitious mathematics teachers who want to try something innovative with their students. The suggested activities are based on these novels: (1) "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" (1865), by Lewis Carroll; (2) "Hatchet" (1987), by Gary Paulsen; (3) "Digital Fortress" (1998), by Dan Brown; (4) "A Wrinkle in Time" (1962), by Madeleine L'Engle; (5) "Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions" (1884), by Edwin A. Abbott; (6) "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" (1892), by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle; (7) "Hannah Divided" (2001), by Adele Griffin; and (8) "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" (1998), by J. K.
