The First Year Introduction Program as a Predictor of Student Academic Performance
Montgomery, Joe C.; Jeffs, Maddy; Schlegel, Jason; Jones, Ty
Journal of Applied Research in the Community College, v17 n1 p60-64 Fall 2009
This study hypothesized that student performance in a First Year Introduction program (FYI), representing an initial sampling of students' academic behaviors, would correlate with subsequent academic success. Subjects were 1,501 first-time, first-year students attending Columbia Basin College in fall quarter 2007, whose FYI performance was graded by program facilitators. Students passing FYI subsequently obtained significantly higher GPAs than those failing and displayed higher retention rates for the next 3 quarters. While conventional research on FYI-type programs has focused on program impacts (e.g., learning or socialization), this study suggests viewing them as an initial sampling of academic behaviors that can identify at-risk students and trigger interventions in advance of their beginning their actual academic programs.
