Fox, Joseph L.; Pennington, Kevin
Journal of Applied Research in the Community College, v16 n2 p119-123 Spr 2009
This article presents the findings from a review of a community college's entrepreneurship course designed to encourage business start-ups. The study utilized a survey to obtain information from 142 Haywood Community College students who completed the Rural Entrepreneurship through Action Learning (REAL) course. Qualitative interviews were conducted with two REAL graduates to provide additional insight related to students' experiences with the course and their business start-ups, and economic contributions by business owners. The results indicated that 26.8% of respondents started a business, 8.5% expanded a business after the completion of the REAL course and 34.5% of participants indicated that their future plans included some type of business start-up. Businesses started by course completers contributed to the local economy by creating jobs and revenues. (Contains 4 tables.)
